We are thrilled to have renowned champion dancers, coaches, and choreographers Markus Smith and Trendlyon (Tren) Veal as our guest instructors on Saturday, May 16th. The event will be held at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church with 2 afternoon workshops (see below). Markus and Tren will also lead a fun pre-dance lesson, and then stick around to dance with us.

Markus and Tren are one of the most dynamic, inspiring, and fun-loving couples! It is hard to take your eyes off of them, even on a crowded dance floor. They are both swing dance champions and own the dance company Stuck on Swing. You may have seen one of Tren’s iconic dance videos go viral on Facebook, YouTube, or TikTok. You may have seen Markus on BET, So You Think You Can Dance, or the movie Love N’ Dancing. Together they travel across the United States and internationally, teaching, competing, judging, and performing. They routinely place among the top 5 in the world of WCS dance competitions, and have shared their signature D.C. Hand Dance style with communities across the U.S. and abroad. They are most passionate about bringing people together and sharing the gift of dance and music with the next generation.

Workshops and Schedule

NOTE: Participation in these workshops requires a solid working knowledge of all basic west coast swing patterns (starter step, side passes, pushes, whips) with good timing.

2:15-2:45 pm: Check in/Warm up. We recommend no later than 2:30 to allow time for parking.

2:45-3:45 pm: Workshop #1: Happy Feet | Add texture and style to your dance with some playful and musical footwork variations.

3:45-4:00 pm: Break. Check in/Warm up.

4:00-5:00 pm: Workshop #2: Micromusicality | An introduction to using smaller movements, accents, and “groove” to look and feel more expressive with the music.

5:00-7:00 pm: Dinner break on your own*. Please note the church will be closed during this time.

7:00-8:00 pm: Pre-dance lesson: Grab the Spotlight! A fun pattern so you can shine on the dance floor.

8:00-10:30 pm: Dance! Kristin Wenger spins the tunes.

*There are many restaurants less than 15 minutes from the church. Stonefield: Mezeh, BJ Brewhouse, Qdoba, Noodles & Company, Mission BBQ, plus many others; Hollymead Town Center: Bonefish, Five Guys, Vinny’s, Timberwood Grill, McDonald’s, plus many others. Plus each has grocery stores such as Harris Teeter and Trader Joes. If the weather is good you may bring a picnic dinner to have on the grass outside or in your car. Please remember to clean up after yourself.

Pre-registration opens Monday, April 20th and closes Thursday, May 14th at noon.

For smoother, faster check-in, we encourage all dancers to pre-register. For the best price, buy the PACKAGE!
The package prices will NOT be available at the door.
